Programs &
Learning Environment William
S. Hackett Middle School is home to a wide variety of
academic programs and student services that make it a
supportive learning environment.
At Hackett, students feel safe and secure
thanks to a warm and caring learning environment and
high expectations for student behavior that include a
strictly enforced disciplinary code that is upheld by
all teachers and administrators. Students learn
tolerance and respect for diversity, important traits in
our multicultural society.
Learning teams
At Hackett, students
are part of learning "teams." On each team, students
have the same teachers for English, math, science, and
social studies, and the same guidance counselor, for 7th
and 8th grades. Each day, students' team teachers and
guidance counselors meet with one another to coordinate
curriculum and other activities.
Students also have access to
the following people for help with academic and/or
personal issues: teachers, assistant principals,
principal, guidance counselors, social worker, police
liaison, and student Natural Helpers.
Technology to support learning
All students use computers as an
integral part of the learning process for all classes.
Languages
Students may choose from Latin,
French, or Spanish language classes.
Honors classes
More than 1/3 of Hackett students are
on the Honor Roll and more than 300 students take at
least one honors-level class.
Students may take honors
classes in English, math, science, and social studies.
Students may also take Regents high school courses in
biology, earth science, and math A.
Sports, clubs and other activities
Students may choose from one or more
of the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross
country, football, soccer, softball, swimming, track and
field, volleyball, and wrestling.
Students may join the
following clubs: art, chess, creative publishing, drama,
science, service learning, ski, or yearbook. Students
may also choose to play an instrument in the band or
orchestra, sing in the choir, or take instrumental or
voice lessons.
Parent involvement
Parents of Hackett students receive
formal written reports on their child's academic
progress eight times a year (four report cards and our
interim reports). Parents may communicate directly with
their child's teachers, guidance counselor, principal,
or assistant principals in whatever way is most
comfortable and convenient: by phone, by e-mail, in
writing, or in person.
Visit Hackett Middle School
Parents can set up "shadowing" days
for their children, during which the child will be the
guest of a Hackett student and accompany that student to
his or her classes. Parents can also set up visits to
see the school themselves. To visit the school, simply
call 462-7143.
