Myers Middle School

Stories of Albany

In November 2009, students at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School were asked the question, "What's your favorite memory of Albany?" as part of the Times Union's ongoing "Story of Albany" series. Myers students answered the question in a series of essays, and the following four stories are a sample of their work.

My favorite thing about Albany is the ice cream. My favorite place is Stewart’s. Stewart’s has all the best ice cream.
All the flavors change according to the seasons. In July they have a yummy fireworks flavor that literally pops in your mouth while you eat it. When I first ate it I thought Stewart’s tried to poison me. My friend laughed and explained to me that it was supposed to do that. I looked at her like she was crazy and continued to eat it because it was delicious.
I still have no idea what makes it pop in my mouth like that. But now every July –either by myself or with some friends – I go get some fireworks ice cream from Stewart’s. They have the best ice cream in Albany.

I’ve been living in Albany for 7 years and the favorite thing I like to do is get an ice cream from the ice cream truck.
It was the end of August. So I started to walk out by New Scotland Avenue with my two dollars and seventy five cents for my jumbo ice cream cookie. Around four o’clock he came by .José came by jingling the tune and says
“Hey man what’s up, want the usual?”
“Sure.”
“It’s the last day of the ice cream truck so ill give you a free ice cream cookie and another one for being my best costumer. “
“Thanks a lot.”
“No problem.”
Turns out he’s been coming around for 7 years and rings the tune 1 more time just for me.

Hi, I’m Tiani. I’ve lived in Albany for 13 years. That’s all my life. It’s my favorite place to be. What I love the most about Albany are the Jazz Concerts they have at the Corning Preserve.
Ruben Studdard was the main act, but in the meantime, my family and I got to listen to many great amateur performers. We all planted comfy chairs along the hill facing the stage. And laid blankets on the grass to lie on. It was relaxing hearing the music. It felt like all my troubles were washed away!
We had fresh squeezed lemonade, fried dough, even alligator that we paid for from the food stands. The alligator was surprisingly delicious though. =)
We were there all night enjoying ourselves and laughing. The people there were very kind as well. That night was absolutely amazing!
I know that the Jazz Concerts they have at the Corning Preserve is what I love about Albany the most.

I think the most exciting moment of my life was when I performed the Nutcracker at the Egg for my ballet concert.
I remember the hustle and bustle of people walking and rushing to get ready and get on stage. Putting on makeup, sitting at the mirror with all those bright lights, and then finally, on the stage! The curtain going up, me standing there perfectly still, waiting for my cue. The people clapping, I felt like a star! I was a soldier marching out on the stage. I could feel the excitement building up inside me. I was nervous as well, very nervous, but when I get on the stage everything disappears. It’s just me and the music.
My mom was there in the first row watching me. At the end of the concert I went home, talking my mom’s ear off with my descriptions of the concert. All the music, the lights, the people clapping, that feeling that you get inside that makes you feel like everyone is watching you. I lived for that feeling.
I am now 13 years old and I live in Albany. Still I have never felt anything like performing on stage, at the Egg.
