COVID-19 testing and consent

A reminder that the City School District of Albany has resumed in-person instruction as of Monday Jan. 11 and also began proactively testing in-person students and employees on a voluntary basis as a precautionary measure due to the surge in COVID-19 cases since the holiday break.

Students opting for in-person instruction in prekindergarten through grade 6, and in self-contained special education classes at all grade levels, will return to school Monday. All other students will remain in the distance learning model.

The district plans to conduct COVID-19 testing on 10% of all in-person students and employees on a voluntary basis over a two-week period, through Jan. 22. This includes employees working in-person at district offices at Academy Park, Harriet Gibbons Student Services Center, Essex Street and Tony Clement Center for Education.

At this time, the state has not designated Albany County as part of a COVID-19 micro-cluster zone, which would require mandatory testing. However, the district is initiating precautionary testing as an extra measure to protect the well-being of its employees, students and families, and to continue to do its part to attempt to contain the spread of the disease.

Parents and guardians of in-person students who have not already completed a COVID-19 testing consent form can complete the consent form online. Parents and guardians can log in with their student’s district Google credentials (our thanks to those who already have completed the consent form; you do not need to complete it again).

The district will use a non-invasive nasal swab for COVID-19 testing. You can check out the video embedded below for a walkthrough of the testing procedure. You can also check out this video by the company that produces the test explaining the process.

Please also remember to complete the daily COVID-19 health screener before the school day begins. It is especially important for in-person students to complete the screener before going to school.

The screener is sent three times each morning beginning at 2:05 a.m. to all parents and guardians via the email on file in schooltool. If you need to add or update the email on file for your family in schooltool, please contact your child’s school.

The daily health screener takes a minute or less to complete and is an important part of our district-wide strategy to protect the health and safety of all members of our school community. Whether your student is attending in-person or remotely, completing the screener each day also supports our partnership with the Albany County Health Department for contact tracing.

Health and safety procedures at all district buildings also will continue to include cleaning and sanitizing nightly. We will continue to follow all required COVID-19 precautions (pre-arrival symptom screening and temperature screening for students and staff, wearing masks, hand hygiene, social distancing of 6 feet or more, and other precautions).
