District provided meals now top 200,000

Staff prepare grab and go meals during district closure.

When times are difficult, you can count on the City School District of Albany to help where it can. That assistance comes in many forms - from many people - but the common goal is supporting our students and their families.

Since March 16, the first day of the district’s building closure, a dedicated team comprised of staff and volunteers has handed out breakfasts and lunches from school sites throughout the city. On March 24, the district expanded meal service to include home delivery. And as of today, May 14, the district is pleased to have provided approximately 206,000 meals to about 2,400 students on a daily basis.

The district continues to operate “grab and go” meals at seven of our schools and delivers daily meals via 23 buses in cooperation with our valued transportation partners, First Student Inc. and Capital District Transportation Authority.

"Our students can't learn if they are hungry," said Superintendent Kaweeda G. Adams.

"Especially when our buildings are closed, the City School District of Albany continues to be committed to serving the whole child - mind and body - and we are incredibly grateful for the employees and community members who have supported this mission since day one."

Here is a Facebook link to recent photos from the seven school locations where pick up occurs, some of which also act as hubs for delivery service. As a reminder, each of the school sites listed below is open from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. each weekday:

  • Albany High School (Washington Avenue entrance), 700 Washington Ave.
  • Albany School of Humanities (ASH), 108 Whitehall Road
  • Arbor Hill Elementary School, 1 Arbor Drive
  • Giffen Memorial Elementary School, 274 South Pearl St.
  • Schuyler Achievement Academy, 676 Clinton Ave.
  • Tony Clement Center for Education, 395 Elk St.
  • William S. Hackett Middle School, 45 Delaware Ave.

The district would not be able to accomplish such an important undertaking without the countless staff members and volunteers who roll up their sleeves every day to ensure our students are fed. Thank you for truly being #allinforalbany.
