Chemists experiment with solutions

Two students pour materials into a cup

Middle and high school chemists in the Extended Year Program started off their week Monday with a series of “Science Solution” experiments under the direction of our community partners from the Museum and Science and Innovation – miSci.

Students measured and mixed water and a few household ingredients in a variety of combinations, then observed which resulting polymer concoction most closely resembled Silly Putty.

Take a look at a Facebook photo album from the lab. (You don't need a Facebook account to see the pictures linked in the highlighted text. A window may appear that says, “To see more from Albany City Schools on Facebook, log on or create an account,” but you can dismiss it by clicking “not now.”)

The winning formula? Two tablespoons of glue, four teaspoons of water and four teaspoons of a borax solution consisting of 1 teaspoon of borax per every 200 milliliters of warm water.
