Nunziato ties school 3-point record as Falcons continue to fly on the court

Madison Nunziato takes a 3-point shot against Schenectady on Jan. 24.

Madison Nunziato tied a school record with seven 3-pointers and Jordan Johnson contributed a brilliant all-around performance to lead the Albany High School girls’ basketball team to a home win over Schenectady on Wednesday night.

A senior, Nunziato finished with a career-best 24 points and became the third Falcon to connect on seven 3-pointers in a game. Bridget Whelan did it twice – in 2015 and 2016 – and current Siena College senior Ahniysha Jackson did it in 2019.

Johnson, also a senior, stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and four steals as the Falcons remained unbeaten in the Suburban Council at 8-0. The Falcons are 12-1 overall and ranked No. 13 in the state among Class AAA schools heading into a tough stretch of games to close the regular season.

On Friday night, the Falcons visit Columbia, which is ranked No. 19 in the state in Class AA. Albany High then is home Tuesday night against unbeaten Averill Park, the state’s No. 1 Class AA team.

After taking on Ballston Spa on Feb. 2, the Falcons also host Shenendehowa (No. 8 in Class AAA) on Feb. 6, and close the regular season with road games Feb. 9 at Niskayuna (No. 25 Class AA) and Feb. 13 at Averill Park.

Congratulations to coach Decky Lawson and his team on a great season, and good luck the rest of the way!
