Falcons’ rally falls short in AAA semis

An ALbany High basketball player faces off against a Shaker basketball player.

A tenacious second-half comeback effort by the Albany High School girls’ basketball team fell short in the Section 2 Class AAA semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College on Thursday night.

The second-seeded Falcons fell behind No. 3 Shaker by as many as 13 points in the first half and trailed by 11 at halftime. Albany High quickly closed the gap to one point midway through the third quarter, but every time the Falcons got close, Shaker had an answer.

A 9-0 run late in the fourth quarter proved decisive as Shaker held on for a 65-55 victory, ending the Falcons’ quest for a third straight large-school title.

Senior Iyanna Weeden led the Falcons with 16 points, 10 in the second half, and classmate Jordan Johnson added 12 points and relentless defense in the final games of their outstanding careers. Junior Mia Corazzini also was tireless on the boards against Shaker’s bigger frontline.

Junior Azera Gates scored 15 points for the Falcons, 14 in the second half to lead Albany High’s rally.

Congratulations to coach Decky Lawson and the entire team on a terrific season!
