Volunteers: backbone of weekend food program

Student volunteers sort packaged food

Volunteers met up at Pine Hills Elementary School on Wednesday morning, unloaded 10,000 pounds of food, sorted it and then divvied it up to be shared among district families in the Summer Weekend Food Program.

Through mid-August, the program will provide a weekend’s worth of nutritious food to families living with food insecurity living. And on Thursday, more volunteers will return to Pine Hills to pack the goodies in bags for distribution to schools and families.

A big thank you to all the volunteers, staff and community partners who helped pack, sort and deliver the food. And a shout out to our amazing supporters at the Albany Fund For Education, who support this program through the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, and MVP, who donated thousands of reusable grocery bags to carry the items.
