Gardens and gathering: Roberts' Eagle Scout service project

Sophomore Henry Roberts has an eagle-eye for identifying the perfect project that will enhance student and staff experience at Albany High: box gardens and benches for one of our school courtyards!

As the new construction at Albany High is now complete, there are a variety of areas ready to be utilized and enjoyed, including several outdoor spaces on campus. When Roberts first saw one of the mostly empty courtyards, he envisioned transforming it into a welcoming spot for activities, gatherings and conversations. He realized this would be the perfect Eagle Scout service project, a crucial step toward earning his Eagle Scout rank.

Roberts quickly got to work, designing an initial layout for the planter boxes and benches. He drafted suitable designs for the space and created a materials list. When he shared his idea with Principal Jodi Commerford, she was thrilled and connected him with the right staff members to bring his project to life.

Using his networking and organizational skills, Roberts coordinated with fellow scouts, staff, teachers, volunteers and mentors to execute the various steps of the project. He extends his gratitude to his father, construction technology teacher Art Erbe and construction technology teaching assistant Eric Williams for their vital support.

To ensure the plants thrived in the local climate and reflected regional botanical diversity, Roberts chose native perennials and shrubs for the courtyard planters.

"It was a long project but will hopefully benefit students, staff, and anyone who uses the courtyard for decades to come," Roberts said.

Congratulations to Roberts on completing this beautiful service project. We wish him all the best as he completes his board of review to become an Eagle Scout.
