Advocacy in action

At Albany High, students are fortunate to have access to approximately 20 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, giving them the chance to tackle college-level work across a variety of disciplines while they’re still in high school.

Our students taking AP US Government and Politics know firsthand the value of these courses and were thrilled to have an opportunity to travel to the state capitol to advocate for policies and funding that support equitable access to AP classes here in New York state, as well as nationwide.

During this unique field trip, students met with several legislators and policymakers to share their stories of why AP courses are important to them. The opportunity to dialogue with leaders was an eye-opening experience.

"It really taught me how to be civically active in a more political sense—actually going up to legislators and understanding how to communicate with them about different topics and policies," shared senior Maksim Gally.

We commend our Falcons for engaging wholeheartedly in this dynamic learning experience and extend our gratitude to social studies teachers Sean Fitzsimons, David Weiss and Henry Cumoletti for accompanying our students and inspiring them to take action as advocates!
