The City School District of Albany Board of Education has appointed Alexander Santana as the district’s next elementary instructional supervisor for science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.
Santana currently serves as the assistant principal at Sheridan Preparatory Academy and will continue in that role through the end of the school year. Prior to that, he spent 3½ years as a math instructional coach serving Albany International Academy and Eagle Point Elementary School.
He also served in that role in the Clarkstown Central School District from 2020-22, with roles as an elementary teacher in Albany at Delaware Community School and Pine Hills Elementary School both before and after that experience.
His early career experience also included roles as an elementary teacher in the Ithaca City School District.
A native of New York City, Santana earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and a master’s in childhood education from Ithaca College. He holds school building leader and school district leader certificates – with certificates of advanced study in both areas – from the former College of St. Rose, where he also earned the Outstanding Student in a Graduate Program Award in 2023.
Fluent in Spanish, Santana also has extensive training in trauma-informed care and culturally responsive education. He will begin in his new role July 1, replacing Sara McGraw, who is retiring at the end of the school year.
