Everyone's a winner in Eagle Point vs. North Albany court clash

Two administrators play basketball together in a fundraiser game.

They came out of athletic retirement, from every job category in the district and of all ages and genders for the love of the game, our students and – of course – bragging rights.

North Albany Middle School tipped off against Eagle Point Elementary School Thursday in the first-ever faculty basketball game. The PTA fundraiser saw high fives and hugs but also a level of competitiveness typical of the NCAA tournament.

The Eagles kicked it off with the first bucket of the game, sunk by Principal Fox. It was only appropriate that EPES felt secure on the court thanks to Hall Monitor Surgick’s prowess (and height). The district’s cross country coach brought stamina and basketball IQ while kindergarten and first grade represented with unparalleled energy and drive. Team MVP goes to Eagle Point’s YMCA aftercare director James Mayben, who defied his years and played with youthful vigor.

Coach Piper’s men and women in blue showed up and out! Dr. Burgess can now go by Dr. J. Assistant Principal McGuire’s court skills are sharp and intense – don’t mess with her because she can, and will, steal and block. School resource officers are heroes on and off the court and while there were many attempted dunks, NAMS’ #4 was successful – more than once – much to the delight of the crowd.

In the end – perhaps due to the home court advantage – North Albany edged out Eagle Point 25-20. The game was both bitter and sweet, but everyone left united as City School District of Albany Falcons.
