Annual Second Grade Environmental Field Trip

For over 20 years, second graders across the district have stepped out of the classroom and onto the farm for a one-of-a-kind environmental science field trip. This long-standing tradition is a collaborative effort between Normanskill Farm, Cornell Cooperative Extension, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Albany Police Department and our dedicated community volunteers.

Our students get a hands-on look at farm life, meeting everything from wooly alpacas to the majestic horses of the Albany Police Department. From watching a blacksmith’s sparks fly to examining the tiny creatures living in Normanskill Creek, it is a day of discovery. Students even tried their hand at churning butter and burned off some energy learning about the lives of predators and the vital importance of bee pollination.
