Smashing goals, saving lives

Anya Miller, Alicia Abdul and Lyra Stetzer

On Wednesday, Albany High senior Anya Miller successfully facilitated her third and final blood drive of the year. Thanks to Miller's advocacy, dedication and enthusiasm, our three community blood drives resulted in 189 pints of blood donations this year!

Miller, club adviser Alicia Abdul and volunteer Lyra Stetzer (pictured left to right), welcomed students, staff and community members throughout the day. Yesterday's goal was 57 pints, and we ended the day with 71—an outstanding achievement!

During the summer months, there is a critical need for blood donations, and we are so proud of our community for stepping up to help save lives. We also are thankful for the professionalism and efficiency of the American Red Cross staff who facilitated yesterday's drive.

We want to shout out all our Albany High students who donated for the first time, as well as those who are now repeat donors! Additionally, our heartfelt gratitude goes out to Board of Education President Sridar Chittur, Ph.D. for donating at yesterday's event.

In recognition of her incredible service to the community, the American Red Cross will award a scholarship to Miller, and she will proudly wear red honor cords at graduation for her volunteerism!

Abdul is thrilled to announce that Stetzer will take on the role of student blood drive coordinator for the 2026-27 school year! She carries on a family tradition of service—her older sister, Anya, was our blood drive coordinator for the 2024-25 school year.

Be sure to visit our Facebook album to view photos from the event. Registration is already live for our community blood drives for the coming year — visit our event calendar to learn more.

The blood drives will take place on Thursday, September 24Thursday, Jan. 21 and Thursday, June 3
