Hands-on math is the best!

Two girls work together to determine the surface area of a prism

On Thursday, sixth graders in Kristen Backes and Dylon Peertamsingh's class at AIbany International Center worked in pairs to determine the surface area of rectangular prisms they created with small plastic cubes.

The students discussed how they arrived at their answers, then wrote about how well they understood the lesson and whether they liked it.

Their lesson came from Illustrative Mathematics, a new district math resource.
