In-person science labs resume

Girl student examines a fossil

In-person science labs started this week at Albany High School, and on Wednesday, students in Lawrence Bizzarro’s AP Environmental Science class examined fossils and compiled records to determine when mass extinctions occurred over the course of our planet’s history.

Mass extinctions – when some 75% of all species die out in a relatively short time – have occurred five times on earth. Most were caused by natural catastrophes, but biologists believe that we’re in the midst of a sixth mass extinction that is man-made. Fossils provide us with the only direct evidence of how mass extinctions unfolded.

As for the science labs: Students taking AP, International Baccalaureate or University in the High School science classes have the option of attending in-person labs beginning this month; in-person Regents labs will start in March.

Those who prefer distance labs will receive prerecorded instruction that covers the same topics.

During the in-person labs, all students and staff are masked and keep a social distance of at least six feet.
