Artist extraordinaire: senior Kaylan Watts

Watts with guiding art teachers, Monahan and Johns

Albany High senior Kaylan Watts is set to be honored by the Colonie Art League with a $500 scholarship at a special art show and reception on Monday, May 5.

Watts was nominated by the Albany High Art Department due to her strong academic performance, exemplary artistic talent and her intention to pursue art studies at the university level. While she has yet to select a school, Watts plans to study animation in college. One of her notable strengths as an artist is her ability to draw human figures with impeccable authenticity.

Kristine Monahan, chair of the Albany High Fine Arts Department, recognized Watts as a natural choice for this scholarship.

"Kaylan is a perfect example of how creativity is not a talent to be cultivated, but rather a natural extension of her enthusiasm and a way for her to connect with the greater world.  I am so proud of her and how much she has grown as an artist this year," said Monahan.

Since her arrival at Albany High, Watts has benefited from the guidance of our talented art teachers including Theresa Story, Diana Del Guidice, Debbie Cronin, Ashleigh Johns and Kristine Monahan. This year, she is enrolled in three art courses, one with Johns and two with Monahan.

In addition to her coursework, Watts has volunteered her time to create stunning portable murals displayed throughout Albany High. In January alone, she dedicated nearly 28 hours to this magnificent project!

This marks the third consecutive year that a student from Albany High has received the Colonie Art League Scholarship. Five students in total were selected for this year's award, each from a different school district in the Capital Region.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Watts and her dedicated teachers for the incredible honor of being chosen for this prestigious award!
