The Albany High School boys’ track and field team turned in a terrific performance competing against elite high school student-athletes at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia last weekend.
Nasief Smith, Daaron Harrell, Samir Gardner, Rohan Edwards-Grant and Adam Elia represented Albany High at this prestigious event, participating in the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. Gardner also competed in the long jump.
The 4x100 team, comprising Smith, Harrell, Gardner and Edwards-Grant, finished 13th overall, an outstanding achievement on a national stage. The 4x400 team, featuring Gardner, Edwards-Grant, Elia and Harrell, made history by breaking a school record previously set in 2017. Their time of 3 minutes, 19.27 seconds surpassed the old mark of 3:19.47.
Additionally, Gardner delivered a standout performance in the long jump, leaping 22 feet, 4 inches.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the New York State Laborers Tri-Funds (LIUNA) and Albany Med for their support in providing the resources necessary for our student-athletes to travel and participate in this competition.
As the season concludes, we take immense pride in our student-athletes' hard work, dedication and achievements, which include five new school records this spring:
- 4x100 (Smith, Harrell, Gardner, Edwards-Grant): 41.43 seconds
- 4x400 (Harrell, Edwards-Grant, Elia, Gardner): 3:19.27
- 100 meters (Gardner): 10.75 seconds
- 200 meters (Edwards-Grant): 21.76 seconds
- Swedish relay (100m-200m-300m-400m run by Smith, Harrell, Gardner, Edwards-Grant): 2:20.44
