We wanted to follow up with additional information regarding the safety concern we experienced during a fight in one of our lunch periods Tuesday, and the steps we are taking to review and enhance security procedures at Albany High School.
A review of our entry procedures has determined that the student who was in possession of the knife that was confiscated during the incident brought it into the building through our regular security check.
We are retraining each member of our security team individually this week to reinforce all necessary steps that must be followed when students are entering the building. We ask for your patience and support as this may contribute to slightly longer entry times in the morning. We recommend that students arrive at school a few minutes earlier if possible to help with this.
The City School District of Albany is in the process of hiring additional security monitors that will be assigned to the high school. The district also has been evaluating new security equipment for our main entrances, and we will keep you updated on that process.
After receiving additional information from the Albany Police Department, a further investigation determined that the student displayed the knife in a threatening manner during the incident Tuesday. Albany police took the student into custody Tuesday and charged them with possession of a weapon.
The safety and security of everyone in our school community is a priority at Albany High and throughout the district. If you have any additional questions, please give us a call at (518) 475-6200.
