Preparing for the polls

A student putting a mock ballot into a counting machine with the help of a volunteer from the League of Women Voters

On Friday, Albany High seniors engaged in a hands-on workshop centered on the topic of voting. With the support of the League of Women Voters of Albany County and the Albany County Board of Elections, our Falcons gained valuable insights into election cycles, voting laws and the voter registration process.

Students had the opportunity to fill out a mock ballot and feed it into a voting machine, getting a taste of what it will be like when they officially head to the polls for the first time after registering to vote.

A special thanks goes to Albany High civics teachers Amanda Weklar, Jessie LaPolla, Graham Wall and Pete Anderson, advanced placement government teacher Sean Fitzsimons and Secondary Instructional Supervisor for Social Studies and World Languages Robert LaCasse for organizing this invaluable lesson, empowering our students to be civic-minded and actively engaged in local, state and national elections.
