Celebrating Pride Month

Happy Pride Month graphic

June is Pride Month, a time for all of us to celebrate and honor our nation’s LGBTQ+ community and commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City.

This month, the City School District of Albany – in partnership with the Albany Public School Teachers Association and the Albany High School Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club – will recognize the many accomplishments and contributions made by LGBTQ+ people throughout history.

We are excited to have our students, faculty and staff engage in informed, age-appropriate discussions about gender identity and inclusivity in our ongoing work to operationalize equity throughout our school district and create safe and inclusive learning environments for all members of our diverse school community.

A significant number of LGBTQ+ people have changed and are changing history in their fields:

  • James Baldwin
  • Leonardo DaVinci
  • Alicia Garza
  • Langston Hughes
  • Sally Ride
  • Albany's own Barbara Smith
  • Alan Turing

The list goes on and on. We celebrate and honor their work and their lives.

We also have shared additional information and resources for our faculty and staff, including a video and resources our Albany High GSA students have created with suggestions for teachers on building gender-inclusive classrooms.

Numerous representatives from our school district also are looking forward to participating in the city’s June 12 Capital Pride Parade in Washington Park. We hope you will join us.
