Pumpkin-centered smarts

Smiling boy holds up decorated plastic pumpkin

Third-graders in Rebecca Bustelos’ class at Giffen Memorial Elementary School crafted book-themed costumes for plastic pumpkins on Wednesday, choosing fiction and non-fiction characters ranging from Clifford the Big Red Dog to spaceships to Batman to ants.

Students will load up their literary pumpkin buckets with fun stuff on Thursday – Halloween – during “math and treat.” They’ll solve math problems, and if they check their work with the teacher and get it right, they get two treats. When they get it right after corrections, they’ll get one treat. The treats include pencils, stickers and other goodies.
