Ceremony embraces Black history

Student waits onstage to take center stage

Giffen Memorial Elementary School celebrated Black History Month on Friday with song, poetry, dance and more.

Besides staff and student performances, the show featured a short film about data scientist and inventor Valerie Thomas; students from different classes were quizzed about her accomplishments afterward, and those with the correct answer won a prize for their class.

The event wrapped up with a talk by Paul Stewart, a co-founder of the not-for-profit Underground Railroad Education Center.
