City School District of Albany security staff are working with the Albany Police Department to investigate threatening messages directed at several schools in the city via Snapchat.
Messages with threats of violence and, in some cases, hate speech have been reported with William S. Hackett Middle School, Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School and at least one Albany charter school as potential targets
As a precautionary measure, Hackett and Myers will have an increased police and security presence during the school day Wednesday. That will include lockout procedures for the full school day. Only district employees with proper ID will be allowed to enter the buildings.
We are grateful to the individuals who brought these matters to our attention Tuesday night so that we could involve law enforcement officials to investigate immediately. Parents and guardians, please talk with your children at home about the potential dangers and consequences of making violent threats in any format, including on social media.
We continue to ask all members of our school community to let us know right away whenever you see something that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you see something, say something.
