Future scientists grow germs

A student introduces bacteria to a petri dish as another student and the teacher look on.

Children are taught their entire lives to steer clear and rid themselves of germs. But on Sept. 24 at Montessori Magnet School they learned how to multiply them – in the name of science, of course!

Cynthia Houser’s students first took “samples” from around the classroom – swabbing tape on pencils, a desk, the stairway railing, a cubby, the floor, soap dispenser and a door handle – and then introduced what was collected to homemade petri dishes. In four to five days the third-graders will examine their experiments under the microscope to see what grows!

Don't worry, they all washed their hands afterwards!
