City School District of Albany and Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School security staff are working with the Albany Police Department to investigate a threatening message directed at the school on Snapchat.
In addition to threats of violence, the message also contained hate speech. Police also are investigating similar threats targeting William S. Hackett Middle School and at least one Albany charter school.
As a precautionary measure, Myers and Hackett will have an increased police and security presence during the school day Wednesday. That will include following lockout procedures for the full school day. Only district employees with proper ID will be allowed to enter the buildings.
Hackett, Myers and at least one Albany charter school were targeted Tuesday night and overnight with threats of violence that, in some cases, also included hate speech. District security staff are working in partnership with the Albany Police Department and other law enforcement agencies to investigate.
We are grateful to the individuals who brought this matter to our attention Tuesday night so that we could involve law enforcement officials to investigate immediately. Parents and guardians, please talk with your children at home about the potential dangers and consequences of making violent threats in any format, including on social media.
We continue to ask all members of our school community to let us know right away whenever you see something that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you see something, say something.
