Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School sixth-grader Isaac Allen (pictured at left in photo) spelled his way to victory as the winner of the City School District of Albany’s annual Spelling Bee on Jan. 19.
The event features the top speller from each elementary and middle school throughout the district, and is open to students in grades 4-8.
Allen—who placed second in the 2017 competition—set a new personal best when he claimed first place this year after correctly spelling “retrospective” in the final round.
New Scotland Elementary fifth-grader John Gormley (pictured at right in photo) and William S. Hackett Middle School eighth-grader Hidayet Chowdhury (pictured center in photo) finished second and third respectively, and will advance with Allen to the Capital Region Spelling Bee at Proctors Theatre on Feb. 13 at 9 a.m.
