'Craft'ing a career as an author

Jerry Craft speaks about publishing to the sixth grade students at Myers.

It was Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School’s turn to be treated to the talents of Jerry Craft on Tuesday!

On day two of the award-winning graphic novelist’s visit to the district, Craft took students through the process, step-by-step, of writing and publishing a book. The grade-level presentations were especially poignant since Craft’s debut novel, New Kid, is part of the district’s grade 6 English language arts curriculum.

Craft is also a New York Times bestselling author of Class Act and School Trip, and the first graphic novelist to win both the prestigious Newbery Medal and Coretta Scott King Author Award. He will meet with William S. Hackett Middle School students on Wednesday.

Additionally, Family Literacy Night with Jerry Craft will be tonight (Tuesday) from 6-8 p.m. at Hackett. The event is open to readers from middle school to adulthood who are connected to Hackett, North Albany or Myers. Light refreshments will be served
