March is 'Fine Arts in Our Schools Month'

March is "Fine Arts in Our Schools Month" in the City School District of Albany, and you can experience the talents of our students in a variety of exhibits, concerts, musicals and other performances in the coming weeks.

Wednesday, March 4

The top choral students will perform in the All-City Chorus concert at 6:30 p.m. at Myers Middle School, with a combined piece featuring elementary, middle and high school students.

Saturday, March 7

The annual Empire State Plaza Student Art Exhibit – featuring more than 300 pieces of artwork by district students from kindergarten to grade 8– runs through March 21 at the Empire State Plaza South Concourse.

Wednesday, March 11

The district’s top elementary, middle and high school orchestral students will take part in the All-City Strings Concert at 6:30 p.m. at Hackett Middle School.

Thursday, March 12

  • Empire State Plaza Student Art Exhibit reception, 5:30 p.m., Empire State Plaza South Concourse.
  • Albany High School Spring Musical, “Cabaret,” 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Saturday, March 14

  • The Albany Marching Falcons, the marching ensemble for the City School District of Albany, will be putting on their collective Irish Saturday at two local St. Patrick's Day parades. The first parade is at noon in North Albany, starting and finishing at American Legion Post 1610 on North First Street. Their second parade is the annual city parade, beginning at 2 p.m. at Central Avenue and Ontario Street and proceeding down Central to State Street, finishing by Broadway.

Tuesday, March 17

The 2020 High School Regional Juried Art Exhibition opens at Opalka Gallery at Sage College of Albany. Exhibit runs through April 18.

Wednesday, March 18

The top band students from elementary, middle and high school will take part in the All-City Band Concert at 6:30 p.m. at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School.

Friday, March 20

Opening ceremony for the 2020 High School Regional Juried Art Exhibition, Opalka Gallery at Sage College of Albany, 5-8 p.m.; awards at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, March 21

  • Albany’s annual New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) festival will be held at Myers Middle School. Student performers from throughout the district will have their music skills evaluated at by a judge. Performance evaluations will begin at 9 a.m.; school music teachers will let students know what time they are slated to perform.
  • The annual Winter Guard Home Show will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Albany High School gym; the Albany Marching Falcons’ Winter Guard will host 15 teams from around the region.
