Celebrating LGBT History Month

LGBT History Month 2022 logo

October is National LGBT History Month, and the City School District of Albany is proud to celebrate the achievements of LGBTQ people throughout the world.

LGBT Month was founded in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher. Wilson chose October to celebrate and teach gay and lesbian history because schools are in session, and the month also includes Coming Out Day on Oct. 11.

The month-long observance is intended to provide role models, build community and make a civil rights statement about the extraordinary national and international contributions of members of the LGBTQ community.

For more information and history, including profiles of 31 accomplished members of the LGBTQ community, you can visit the LGBT History Month website

Additional resources, including resources for educators, also are available on the GLSEN website.
