Allen reigns again at district bee

Isaac Allen and Ayub Degi pose after placing first and second, respectively, in the district spelling bee.

Isaac Allen’s spelling ability is out of this G-A-L-A-X-Y.

That’s the word the Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School eighth-grader spelled correctly to clinch the title of District Spelling Bee Champion for 2020.

The annual event which pits fourth through eighth-graders against each other is a nail biter of a competition comprised of the top speller, decided in earlier bees at individual schools, from every elementary and middle building in the district.

Sixth-grader Ayub Gedi from North Albany Middle School secured second place in the bee, held on Friday, Jan 10 at William S. Hackett Middle School.

Allen and Gedi will be joined by Timothy Reaport (Grade 6, Albany School of Humanities), Jaemier Hemingway (Grade 6, Giffen Memorial Elementary Elementary) and Ezekiel Dixon (Grade 4, Arbor Hill Elementary) at the 2020 Capital Region Spelling Bee on Feb. 4 at Proctors Theatre.

Allen was the district champion in 2018 and runner-up in 2019.

Congratulations to all our excellent spellers! Romeo Williams, Rei Shkullaku, Mayzon Johnson, Fender Wells, Maya Colman, Micah St. Marie, Annilla Johnson, Amira Chater, Jude Caton and Matilda Gish all worked hard and did an amazing job.
