Fourth-grade classroom temporarily relocated due to abatement work

Due to an unanticipated asbestos abatement project that is necessary because of a contractor error during bathroom renovation work Thursday, Kayla Williams' fourth-grade classroom will be relocated for the school day Friday.

Near the end of our school day Thursday, an employee with a contracting company accidentally drilled through the wall from the bathroom into Ms. Williams' classroom, room 206. The drilling was not intended to go all the way through the wall.

This unintended drilling disturbed plaster that contained vermiculite, which may include asbestos. Due to this, we have sealed off the classroom and are conducting a state-mandated asbestos abatement project in that space. We anticipate that the abatement work and required testing will be completed in time for the students to return to their usual classroom Tuesday.

No one from our school community will be allowed to enter room 206 until the abatement project is completed. Ambient Environmental Inc., an independent firm that specializes in asbestos abatement, will conduct the work as well as required visual inspection and mandatory air monitoring tests to confirm the area is safe to reopen.

The cleaning and testing procedures Ambient Environmental follows are in accordance with New York State Industrial Code Rule 56.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this contractor error has caused. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Principal Sophia Newell or Assistant Principal Meghan D'Alessandro at (518) 475-6875.
