This in an introductory course intended for those curious about the building trades. Learning starts with basic shop safety and expectations, then transitions into measurements commonly used in the construction industry using the English measurement system. Students will learn safe and proper use of various hand tools, hand power tools and stationary power tools. Students learn about various building materials used in the building industry, such as lumber species and dimensions, engineered wood products and fasteners. Integrating the reading of building plans, students will utilize these skills to build several individual woodworking projects such as end tables, stools, clocks, benches or other similar projects.

Construction Technology II continues with safety in the construction industry and gives the students an opportunity to get an OSHA 10-hour safety training certificate. Blueprint reading and building codes will be taught, followed by concrete foundations and masonry. The students will learn floor framing identification, how to lay out a residential floor system and be able to identify the framing components of a framed wall. Students will move on to roof systems and rafter layout, as well as interior finishes such as the installation and repair of gypsum wall board (sheetrock). Basic residential wiring and electricity will also be covered, teaching the students how to lay out circuits, install lights, switches and outlets. Students will also be introduced to basic plumbing, such as PVC drain systems, sweating copper pipe and connecting PEX water lines. Students’ projects will increase in size and complexity to integrate the acquired skills of this class.

In Construction Technology III, students will learn about the exterior components of a house, including windows, doors, roofing and siding. Finish carpentry, trim work and cabinetry will also be taught, followed by stair systems, stair stringer layout and framing. Students will learn proper employability and communication skills to prepare them for work-based learning opportunities and internships. Students will conclude the class by completing an individual or group capstone project.
