Thinking across subjects

Student gazes into preservative jar

What do mummies and pickles have in common? Sixth-graders at Albany International Center can tell you!

On Thursday, the students took part in lessons involving science, social studies and library studies. They conducted scientific experiments using natural preservatives for living organisms, then created canopic jars (theirs contained cucumbers, not body parts) and decorated them with hieroglyphics and clay sculptures of Anubis, the God of the underworld in ancient Egypt.

Thanks to teachers Kristen Backes and Dylon Peertamsingh and librarian Heather Bryer for this fascinating and fun interdisciplinary experience!

Check out a Facebook photo album from the lessons. (You don't need a Facebook account to see the photos linked in the highlighted text. A window may appear that says, "To see more from Albany City Schools on Facebook, log on or create an account,” but you can dismiss it by clicking “not now.”)
