Important info for AP students

Student types at a computer

The College Board recently made several program changes that will affect Albany High School students taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes and tests.

Deadlines

Albany High requires that students enrolled in AP classes take the exam associated with the class. The deadline for students to commit to taking an AP exam is Nov. 1.

Exams are initially ordered in November, and any student signing up after Nov. 1 will have to pay a late fee. No exams will be ordered after March 1.

Exam fees

There is a $94 exam fee for each AP course. Depending on their family income, students may be eligible to take an exam at a lower cost. However, students must complete this form and return it to school in order to be eligible. The form can be submitted to Sharae Wright in room 246.

Payment

Students may pay the cost in one or two payments. All payments or first payments must be made by Nov. 1.

Students who opt to pay in two installments must pay the first (a $40 deposit) by Nov. 1 and the second (the $54 balance) by March 1. If final payment is not made by March 1, the student will not be able to take the exam.

Payment may be made by cash, check or money order payable to Albany High School.

Students should return payment and paperwork to Sharae Wright in room 246. The information also can be mailed to AP/IB registration, c/o Leah Evans, Albany High School, 700 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12203.

Late fees

If a student drops an AP course after Nov. 1 or does not take the AP exam in May, he or she will lose the $40 deposit. This includes students eligible for lower cost exams.

Students who sign up to take an exam after Nov. 1 and before March 1 will have to pay a $40 late fee in addition to the regular $94 exam fee.

Online registration

Starting with the 2019-20 school year, AP students must “join” AP teacher courses through The College Board website, myap.collegeboard.org. Students can create a new account or access their existing one. Upon joining the teacher’s class, the student will be registered for the exam.

The new online registration process will allow students to access practice tests and other resources online with the help of a teacher. Find out more information what’s new in 2019.
