At Albany High, we recognize the importance of educating students about civic responsibility and empowering them to effect change in their local community and beyond.
On Wednesday, our seniors pursuing the Seal of Civic Readiness on their diplomas participated in an interactive assembly led by Sierra Sangetti-Daniels from the People's Perception Project (P3). This event marked the start of a yearlong civics study featuring various interactive presentations aimed at inspiring and equipping students for their civics capstone projects.
With the support of partners from the Albany Chapter of the NAACP, The Red Bookshelf, Troy for Black Lives, Freedom Unshackled and the Afghan Community Center, Sangetti-Daniels guided students through exercises and discussions on societal power, the importance of voice and valuing personal stories.
Students bravely took the microphone, answering questions and sharing insights about the topics at hand. A highlight was a tug-o-war object lesson that gave students a visual representation of how power dynamics can play out when advocating for a particular cause.
Future presentations will include a civics fair, where students will engage with community organizations, and workshops to aid in developing their Seal of Civic Readiness capstone projects.
We extend our gratitude to the community leaders who engaged our students with care, empathy, and empowerment throughout this fascinating session.
We also commend our Albany High social studies teachers Peter Anderson, Jessie LaPolla, James Morrill, Barbara Riordan, Graham Wall, David Weiss and Amanda Weklar for their unwavering commitment to guiding their students on this educational journey focused on real-world change!
