The bank is open for business at 8:10 a.m.!
Kate Klink and Libby Bellacosa’s students are happily learning the value of a dollar (or a nickel) at a young age.
The second graders just began a financial literacy unit where they earn “money” for excellent hallway behavior, acts of kindness, a clean cubby and even penmanship. The other side of the coin, so to speak, is that they also now have bills to pay!
There’s a cubby rental fee, a charge for not being kind and payment is due if a student strays from the task at hand. All transactions are recorded in a personal ledger - similar to a bank statement or checkbook - and the students gain valuable practice in making change and counting cash.
On Friday the miniature money managers can use their savings to purchase erasers, a day as line leader, lunch with Ms. Klink and extra free time.
