A student crouches behind a desk during a trench battle simulation.

During a unit on World War I, grade 8 took to the trenches - literally - during a social studies lesson.

Isabel Rutkey’s classes simulated a trench warfare battle on Monday. After studying the military tactics involved, the students acted out land combat with paper grenades, replicated chlorine and mustard gas attacks, fled disease-carrying rodents and made peace with each other to recognize a 1914 Christmas Day ceasefire.

The experiential activity was an excellent way to simulate the life and combat conditions our troops faced along the Western Front.
