Fun (but gross) lab teaches digestion

North Albany Middle School student demonstrates mechanical digestion.

On Feb. 6, North Albany Middle School students learned to play with their food - or at least experiment with it!

Sixth-graders in Lisa Leonardo’s science classes built a replica of the digestive system using regular household items like bags (stomach) and paper towel rolls (esophagus). They then simulated the differences between mechanical and chemical digestion with other recognizable goods like bread and bananas (the food) and water (saliva) and orange juice (stomach acid).

Hands on science is the best kind of science!
