Important reminders for modified winter sports

As we prepare for our winter athletic season for our students in grades 7-8, we have some important reminders to share.

Firstly, the last day to register for modified sports via Final Forms is Friday, Nov. 21.

Please be reminded that each student-athlete needs an up-to-date physical. Families are encouraged to schedule a visit with their child's provider to secure a completed physical form. If this is not possible, the district physician will offer sports physicals; dates, locations and times are in this news story.

Practices and tryouts begin on Monday, Nov. 24. You can access the schedule via this Google Form.

Secondly, we want to share reminders about the City School District of Albany’s Interscholastic Athletics Code of Conduct, and our Academic Eligibility Policy in particular.

To participate in athletics, students must be academically in good standing. For the start of the winter season, those determinations are based on each student-athlete’s grades during the first marking period of the school year, which closes Nov. 7.

You can find the full Interscholastic Athletics Code of Conduct and additional details in our Board of Education Policy and Regulations 5280/5280R, which explain our expectations for all student-athletes.

As an Athletic Department and school district, our goal is to ensure that all student-athletes understand the importance of academic achievement and are supported in their growth in the classroom and their chosen sport.

After-school tutoring is available to students in grades 7-8 at their middle school. Please contact your building principal or designated tutoring coordinator for additional details and sign-up instructions:

  • Newcomer Program, Dylon Peertamsingh: dpeertamsingh@albany.k12.ny.us
  • North Albany Middle School, Principal Andrea Piper: apiper@albany.k12.ny.us
  • Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School, Ray Parker: rparker1@albany.k12.ny.us
  • William S. Hackett Middle School, Darien Lewis: dlewis2@albany.k12.ny.us

Please note that tutoring support for students at Tony Clement Center for Education is built into the regular school day programming.

Our department and coaching staff will continue to communicate directly with student-athletes and families to clarify expectations and share information about available academic resources. We remain committed to partnering with our students and you to ensure academic success throughout the year.
