First graders learn to code

Student operates a robotic mouse

Delaware Community School Math Interventionist Deb Whipple had Lindsay’s Rudnick’s first graders coding robotic mice Thursday for the first time ever, and they loved it!

“Code and Go Mouse” robots introduce students to computer programming. The first graders rolled dice and used their addition and subtraction skills to solve an addition or subtraction problem. They then programmed their mouse to move toward the correct answer on a numbered floor mat.

Both the robots and the math mats are part of Delaware’s math lending library, which allows teachers to sign out math games and activities for their students.

Take a look at some Facebook photos of the fun. (You don't need a Facebook account to see the photos linked in the highlighted text. A window may appear that says, "To see more from Albany City Schools on Facebook, log on or create an account,” but you can dismiss it by clicking “not now.”)
